Alcohol use disorder can range from problematic drinking to severe physical dependence. Common signs can include difficulty controlling alcohol consumption, increasing tolerance, cravings, withdrawal symptoms, drinking despite health or relationship problems, and unsuccessful attempts to reduce alcohol use.
Treatment can involve medications that help reduce cravings or support recovery, psychiatric care, behavioral and support services, and ongoing monitoring. Because alcohol withdrawal can sometimes be medically dangerous, patients who may be physically dependent on alcohol should be appropriately evaluated to determine whether outpatient treatment is suitable or whether a higher level of care is needed.
