Understanding Dual Diagnosis

Substance use disorders frequently occur alongside conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, trauma-related disorders, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric conditions. This combination is commonly referred to as a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder.

Treating substance use without addressing an underlying psychiatric condition can make long-term recovery more difficult. Addiction Psychiatry evaluates both areas so an integrated treatment plan can address substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns together. Treatment may include psychiatric medications, addiction-focused medications when appropriate, and ongoing support services.
