Opioid use disorder can involve prescription pain medications, heroin, fentanyl, and other opioids. Over time, opioid use can result in tolerance, physical dependence, withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and continued use despite serious consequences.
Treatment may include medications used in the management of opioid use disorder, along with psychiatric evaluation, ongoing medication management, counseling or support services, and relapse-prevention strategies. Treatment plans are individualized based on medical history, substance-use patterns, previous treatment, and other factors.
