With over 30 years of experience treating adults and adolescents struggling with mental health conditions and substance use disorders, Dr. Carlos Guerra, Jr. has dedicated his career to helping individuals and families navigate the challenges of mental illness and addiction. His passion lies in addiction psychiatry, particularly in treating individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, commonly referred to as dual diagnosis.
Dr. Guerra graduated from McGovern Medical School in 1989. He completed his Adult Psychiatry Residency at Baylor College of Medicine in 1993, followed by his Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in 1994.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Guerra has held several leadership positions in behavioral health and addiction treatment. He served as the Medical Director of Adolescent Services at the Prevention and Recovery Center (PaRC) in Houston for 18 years. Since 1994, he has worked with Spring Shadows Glen (SSG) and PaRC, providing psychiatric care to adults and adolescents facing complex mental health challenges and substance use disorders. Additionally, he has served as a consulting psychiatrist at Orchard on the Brazos since 2020.
For Dr. Guerra, psychiatry is more than a profession—it is a lifelong passion. He understands that addiction and mental illness affect not only individuals but also their families and loved ones. He believes that successful treatment begins with compassion, trust, understanding, and a personalized approach to care.
A Message from Dr. Guerra
"After more than three decades of practicing psychiatry, I can sincerely say that I still love what I do. Helping individuals overcome addiction, regain emotional stability, and rebuild their lives has been one of the greatest privileges of my career.
I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, regardless of their past or present struggles. Addiction and mental illness do not define who you are, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
My team and I are committed to providing a safe, secure, confidential, and judgment-free outpatient treatment experience. We recognize that every individual's journey is unique, and we strive to provide personalized, evidence-based care that addresses both mental health and substance use disorders.
Whether you are beginning your recovery journey, experiencing a setback, or simply seeking greater emotional stability, we are here to help.
My team and I look forward to walking alongside you on your journey toward mental wellness, lasting recovery, and a healthier, more fulfilling life."
— Dr. Carlos Guerra, Jr.
